Keep Trim by Eating Grapefruit

The Florida Department of Citrus insists that grapefruit (white & pink) can help you lose weight. This is not a fad diet! A flavonoid called naringin, which gives the grapefruit its bitter taste, is known to slow enzymes in the small intestine involved in metabolizing some fats and carbohydrates. So citrus researchers believe that naringin may promote weight loss and help prevent metabolic problems that can cause weight gain. Excess weight increases the chances of developing cardiovascular disease, joint problems, respiratory issues and diabetes. Naringin may also be instrumental in inhibiting cancer-causing compounds and thus may have potential chemotherapeutic value.

The study that was performed showed some weight loss when eating fresh grapefruit along with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Those that ate a fresh grapefruit half three times a day lost an average of 3.6 pounds over the 12-week study. The results of the study also showed an improvement in their insulin levels. Eating grapefruit is a good ides because it is packed with vitamins and minerals. The nutrient content of ½ grapefruit contains 167 mg of potassium and 41 mg of vitamin C. An 8-ounce glass of fresh squeezed grapefruit juice contains 400 mg potassium and 94 mg of vitamin C.

Caveat:

People who are on a few specific medications, including calcium channel blockers immune suppressants, semi-synthetic human estrogenic hormones, high blood pressure and certain cholesterol lowering medications and certain sedative compounds, are advised not to consume grapefruit in any form, as it can alter the effects of the medication. In addition, the effects of drinking grapefruit juice is cumulative, which means that if you drank a glass of grapefruit juice daily with your medication for a week, the drug interaction would be stronger at the end of the week than at the beginning.
