Mind Matter

Obesity may be linked to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease in women. According to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, women who are obese at age 70 are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than women who are not.

The study, conducted over 18 years, found that a woman’s body mass index (BMI) can be used to predict risk of the disease. Women with a BMI of 29 or higher were found to have the greatest increase in risk. Women who were of average weight or near overweight at the time of the study were the least likely to develop the disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers an online calculator for computing BMI at www.cdc.gov.
