Atkins Diet Continues to Feed Debate Health Care Professionals with Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine are urging the top U.S. hospitals to ban the Atkins Diet, featuring it can lead to kidney and liver damage and other complications. “Hospitals that are
serving high protein (meats) and fatty foods are doing little to improve the health of the patient,” says nutrition director for the committee, which is preparing a report on hospital food. The high-protein ~ low carbohydrate Atkins diet can increase the risk of osteoporosis and kidney disorders and low-fat diets rich in vegetables and grains help prevent heart disease, diabetes, cancer, digestive disorders and other health problems. The independent American Heart Association does not recommend Atkins for weight loss. By restricting foods that provide essential nutrients, the AHA says, such diets can lead to long-term health problems and premature death. |
