Cold Sore Help

Although there is still no cure for cold sores, or fever blisters, there are natural ways to reduce their discomfort and shorten their stay. Taking L-lysine and eating foods high in lysine can help alleviate symptoms and lysine is an essential amino acid and one of the basic building blocks of protein. Not surprisingly, you will find it in protein rich foods such as red meat, chicken, fish, dairy and soy products.

Future Outbreaks?

A small study conducted in 1984 at Baylor University found that 1,000 mgs of L-lysine helped reduce recurrences of cold sores. Try adding 1,000 mgs of L-lysine a day to your diet, but only when you feel an outbreak is imminent. (No studies have been done on the long-term effects of taking L-lysine on a daily basis.)

Spicy foods often make the pain of a cold sore worse, so avoid them when you can. If the pain is severe, apply ice to the inflamed area.
