Eating Well For Less

It is no wonder Americans are gaining weight. A new study of supermarkets shows that cookies, candy and bacon have dropped 2% in price, while the cost of foods we are supposed to be eating like fruits and vegetables has jumped an astronomical 19%.

One encouraging finding is that prices have stabilized for many canned and frozen vegetables and fruits, which retain almost all the nutritional value of the fresh. It helps to buy produce in season and scout out deals at your local farmer’s market.

Did you know that malic acid is used to keep crackers, cookies and candy from spoiling and is sometimes included for its tangy taste? It comes from apples, so how harmful could it be?

Despite its bad sounding name, when used as a preservative, malic acid is generally considered safe, unlike many chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer in animal studies.
